Support > In-Marking Data Recording (IMDR)

A useful feature of Marker's Black Box is that it records the marker's behaviour and saves this data into an Excel file. Just as in-flight data recorders and in-vehicle data recorders store information about the mechanics of a journey, so Marker's Black Box records information about the marker's behaviour every time an item is marked. It records data about the items that have been marked, such as the date, the coursework item being marked, the marker's name, the mark, the word length of the marker's comments, the number of additional remarks selected, the time taken to mark the item, and the marks awarded for each criterion. This data could be valuable for research purposes, such as testing for correlations between the time taken to mark a report and the actual mark awarded, the word length of the feedback and the mark awarded, and so on. If a tutor used Marker's Black Box for all their marking, they would have a vast amount of data that they could analyse. Such an analysis could give useful insights into their own marking behaviour. If the application were to be used by a team of markers, it would then be possible to use this data to characterise different types of markers, test for inter-marker reliability, and test a range of different hypotheses about marking. For illustrative purposes, each time the application starts, some of this data is presented to the marker, such as the all-time average mark awarded (see Figure 1).
